When to Consider a Raised Bed Garden

Jun 27, 2012 | Blog

Are you interested in growing some edible plants? If so, a raised garden bed might be the best thing you’ve ever added to your yard. Digging a new garden plot in the ground can be a lot of work: removing sod or weeds, digging into clay soil, adding manure, removing rocks, planting and then weeding it every week to keep it well-maintained.

An easy way to get started growing vegetables is to build a raised bed. It can be anywhere from 2 feet x 2 feet to 10 feet x 4 feet. Starting small is best!

A great benefit of a raised bed is how easy it is to access. If you have a tough time bending over or getting low to the ground, this bed will be much kinder to your back and knees.

If you get overwhelmed with the thought of a large garden area a raised bed might be for you. It’s easier to access, plant and maintain.

Plant these seeds in your newly built raised bed to reap the delicious rewards in fall: basil, spinach, lettuce, carrots, beets, kale, collards, pansies, broccoli, cabbage

Some ideas for next summer: tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, basil, dill, eggplant, beans, corn, marigolds, sunflowers, cucumbers and watermelon.

My family builds a temporary hoop house over our raised beds and grow greens, onions and carrots and beets into winter and early spring!
