Maryland Native Plants That Thrive : Serviceberry

LGS Notes: Serviceberry is a multi stemmed, medium height native tree with spring blooming flowers and edible berries in the summer.  These trees are great for adding height to smaller areas.  Their berries attract lots of birds in the summer, and are even edible for humans.  Its flowers also attract honeybees and mining bees. I like to plant a variety of things under serviceberries including coastal leucothoe, oakleaf hydrangea, moss and creeping phlox, tickseed, spotted geranium, Jacob’s ladder, coral bells and much more! We use the ‘Autumn Brilliance’ variety in our designs a lot to add height variation to a new landscape bed.
