PA Fieldstone Terraced Garden Bed with Native Plantings
This client had us come out and ‘renovate’ his garden beds. We removed some plantings, transplanted some plants and added new ones. Often clients will ask us to ‘organize’ their gardens. So we take what they have- often over grown or too many different plants- and we focus the design. We’ll utilize much of what is planted already, add more or group the same plants for more of an effect and add in some new height or textures for variety.
This client also asked to build a bed along the side of the house where the slope wasn’t as easy to mow. We used PA flagstone to build this terrace bed. I like the natural look of the dry lay stacked stone. We then planted some native planting beneficial for wildlife. We planted ‘Alfredo’ American cranberry, shamrock inkberry holly, Amsonia hubrichtii (commonly called Bluestar), and black-eyed susan’s. For this garden we’re looking for a more meadowy natural feel vs a manicured landscape look.
The ‘Alfredo’ american cranberry is a great shrub for partially shade portions of your landscape. The shamrock inkberry holly is an evergreen that is tolerant of deer, rabbits, and is great for partial shade and erosion control. Bluestars are named for their blue, star-like flowers. They are great in the shade and provide beautiful yellow/orange fall foliage. Black-eyed Susan’s (Maryland’s state flower!) is best in full sun but definitely tolerates part shade and may still be in bloom on warmer days in the fall.
