Red Maple: Maryland Native Plants for Interest
Maryland Native Plants for Fall Interest
Acer rubrum– Red Maple
The red maple is a beautiful tree for fall interest. This is a medium-sized deciduous tree with rich red foliage in the fall. In the late winter to early spring it produces showy red blooms. Also notable for its reddish stems and twigs. It grows well in well-drained and wet soil. It can tolerate full sun to part shade exposure and is cold hardy. Red maple is great for use as a specimen tree, shade tree or street tree. It also works well in a rain garden.
LGS Notes:
Acer rubrum is such a ubiquitous tree in the natural landscape here in North America, so I love to see folks incorporate it into managed spaces as well. It’s tolerant of so many conditions and the fall foliage color never disappoints! There are many cultivars on the market today too, which means that even those with smaller yards can enjoy this beautiful tree! –Amy
We have a mature Red Maple that provides wonderful shade to the front of our house in the summer. The red flower clusters that emerge in late March/early April are a welcome burst of color after the long winter, and one of my favorite first signs of spring! –Jessica
