One of my clients turned me on to this book when we were building a stone wall in her garden last fall. This book is a quick, easy read and full of information on native plants. Mr Porter organizes his native plant suggestions by location to be used in the garden, color or possible replacements for a more commonly used landscape plant. This method of organization makes it easy to use the book as a reference. If I’m looking for some ground covers to use to replace that damn english ivy that keeps taking over all I need to do is find that chapter and there are many options laid out to be found easily.
Mr Porter also talks about invasive plants that are taking over our green areas and suggests natives that are similar in growth pattern to replace them with. He plants ‘Seeds of Hope’ inspiring readers to get involved with gardening and making wise plant selections. He also offers numerous varieties when suggesting plants. Mr Porter discusses how to build a rain garden, talks about plants that are good for pollinators and gives information about the unsung heroines in the early native plant movement.
All in all this was a nice book with interesting and relevant information and great photos if you are interested in eco friendly gardening.
