Bleeding Heart: Thriving Native Plant for Maryland Piedmont

cutleaf bleeding heart

LGS Notes: Bleeding heart is an ideal native perennial for shade gardens.  It is deer tolerant and rabbit tolerant, and it stays small and compact, making it ideal for a more formal garden.  Bleeding hearts pair well with other colorful shade perennials like coral bells and espresso geranium. It’s an early source of pollen for bees and one of the first spring blooms. Bleeding heart attracts hummingbirds! I like to plant it with other deer resistant shade plantings like Virginia bluebells, spiderwort, ferns, sedges, hellebores and coral bells.
