Federal Hill Garden Renovation
New Federal Hill Landscape Garden Renovation
This past week we completed a total garden renovation of a backyard in Federal Hill, Baltimore. We love these projects with little properties. Its a fun challenge to figure out how to make the largest impact in a small space. Our client requested we completely remove the existing landscape and create a dog friendly yard. One of their pups is an escape artist so they needed a fence and gate designed and installed that were escape proof. First, our designer, Lauren, created 2 design options for the home owner. Her goals were dog friendly, low maintenance, have a patio and some grass and for it to look like a full/cottage garden.
The clients decided to go with the first option to have a small landing and some gardens and grass outside their back door and a patio in the upper yard. We first had to remove the existing raised beds and trellises, paver patio, extensive paver patio base of 2 inches of sand and 8 inches of #57 stone and old plants not being reused.
After everything was completely removed except the exisiting stone walls,
Sod was laid down around the stone pathway, and new plantings were added all around. Falsecypress, Fire cracker dianthus, Karl Forester peonies, Silver Gem violets and Blue Marvel salvia. A wooden privacy fence was constructed to divide the yard and the alleyway, with a gate to keep the dog in.
We also installed a few hayracks to add in some vertical gardening. We planted a mix of annuals including sweet potato vine, creeping jenny, bacopa, solenia begonias, purple angelonia and calocausia. These wall gardens will be overflowing with blooms until the falls frost comes.
Custom cut bluestone walkway with pond gravel in the joints and blue stone stepping stone pathway.
Another patio was laid out on the second level. Salvia, heuchera, and liatris, and lavender, Hummingbird Clethra, and Schip Laurel were planted all around it. Existing roses were also incorporated into the design.
Custom cut bluestone patio with pond gravel joint stone. Existing variegated dogwood tree was transplanted to a better location. Blue marvel salvia.
Purple knockout salvia, caramel heuchera under dogwood tree, liatris and a transplanted boxwood that was onsite already.
See the redbud tree in the corner? The 2 small ornamental trees we planted (redbud and dogwood) will provide a nice backdrop of taller height and some shade without becoming too large.
