‘Peppermint Pearl’ Wintergreen

Wintergreen is a creeping, woody evergreen.  It is great for a groundcover and woodland gardens.  Showy white, bell-shaped flowers bloom in June to July and the leathery leaves are glossy dark green.  In fall, the leaves turn a purplish shade, and beautiful red berries form and persist through winter.  This cultivar, however, produces white berries!  Grows best in part-shade and moist, acidic, well-drained soil.

I love using wintergreen in a deep shade garden for some winter interest. I have also planted it in container in full sun with success. Walking by the bright red berries in the cold weather cheers me up! -Lauren

Wintergreen is one of my favorite plants for late-season container design, so I’m always excited to come across interesting cultivars like ‘Peppermint Pearl’.  It pairs well with so many things!  This season I have it in one of our Errington Ray shallow troughs with with Calluna vulgaris and Heuchera. -Amy
