Container gardens are one of my favorite things to create and re-create every season. They are small, manageable spaces to decorate and maintain. It’s never too late in the season to get some container gardens started. A nice planter really makes a deck, patio or front door stand out.
I usually decorate pots in two’s and flank an entrance with one pot on each side. Here are some tips for choosing the right plants for your planters:
- Both pots don’t need to have all the same plants but some plants should repeat.
- Always choose plants with the right sun exposure. If your pot doesn’t receive 4-6 hours or more of direct sunlight a day you’ll need to select plants that like shade.
- Select plants at a variety of heights- tall, medium, and low, in addition to plants that drape over the side.
- Select plants that follow a color scheme.
- Use larger pots and select a taller evergreen for each pot, then add some perennials and some seasonal annuals that change in spring, summer, and fall.
- Use plants with different textures- spiky and grass-like growth, rounded leaves, pointed leaves, variegated, etc.
- Add in some edible or medicinal plants like a pepper plant, culinary herbs, echinacea, chamomile, or even a tomato plant!
