Dec 20, 2013 | Blog

It’s the Friday before Christmas and all through the brain

Thoughts about last minute gifts sure not to be lame…

Do you have a gardener in your life (like in your family- this is not hints for gifts for gardeners that you hire- just to be clear)? Want to get them a special gift? Here are some ideas! All are local or small businesses. As someone who spends a LOT of time gardening I assure you these gifts will please!

7 Great Gift Ideas for a Gardener

1. Give the gift of compost! You can get gift certificates from Veteran Compost.

Give them a call and Justin will email or mail you your certificate. These guys take local organic food scraps and turn them into great quality compost for our gardens. What gardener wouldn’t be touched by the gift of compost!

2. Give some REALLY helpful unique garden tools, here are my favs:

A hori hori is great for smaller jobs of weeding, digging, knocking dirt off roots and much more. Its best used when you want to be sure all of the root of each weed is removed thoroughly. You can buys these from Vicki at Garden Shop Online in the ‘Japanese Garden Tool’ section.

A japanese hand hoe is great for weeding larger areas where ground is not hard. You can buys these from Vicki at Garden Shop Online in the ‘Japanese Garden Tool’ section.

Felco #2 had held pruners are sold at Sun Nurseries in Woodbine MD. You will have these for life if you don’t lose in the garden them first!

A Stirrup or Hula Hoe- This particular company and hoe are the best in my experience because of the shape of the ‘stirrup’. Select the Ammann Oscillating/Stirrup Hoe at Earth Tools

3. A box of handpicked chocolates from Sweet Cascades Chocolatier in Ellicott City

4. A bottle of wine from The Wine Bin in Ellicott City

5. A gift certificate to Clarks Ace Hardware which stocks lots of items your favorite gardener would love like gloves, tools, unique perennials, annuals and bulbs, veggie seeds and starts, trinkets for your garden, amendments, mulch and much more!

6. Silk long underwear for the gardener who gets cold or gardens in cold weather. You can get this at REI in Columbia or online. Always look for 100% silk- it comes in a camisole, long sleeve, short sleeve and pants. Silk long underwear is thin, cozy and keeps you shockingly warm. Its not uncomfortable like your typical long underwear. You can wear it and barely notice besides the added warmth.

7. A gift certificate to Sun Nurseries. Robin stocks the indoor shop at Sun with lots of cute, interesting, unique gifts that gardeners would LOVE! Ornaments, tools, books, garden gear, terrariums, indoor plants and much more!

Good luck, happy shopping and I hope my husband reads this wink wink. Just kidding- I already have all these!
